Blue Origin Makes History With First Successful New Glenn Booster Landing and NASA Mars Mission Launch

 


Jeff Bezos's Blue Origin achieved a monumental milestone on November 13, 2025, when its massive New Glenn rocket not only successfully deployed NASA's twin Mars-bound spacecraft but also stuck its first-ever booster landing on a seafaring platform. The 320-foot-tall rocket lifted off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida at 3:55 PM Eastern time, marking the company's second New Glenn launch and first commercial mission with customer payload. This dual accomplishment represents a watershed moment for Blue Origin as it positions itself to compete directly with Elon Musk's SpaceX in the increasingly competitive commercial space launch market.

The landing achievement was particularly significant given Blue Origin's previous attempt in January 2025, when the company's inaugural New Glenn flight successfully reached orbit but failed to recover the first-stage booster. During that maiden flight, Blue Origin attributed the failed landing attempt to engines that did not properly reignite during descent. The company spent the subsequent ten months meticulously analyzing the failure, working closely with the Federal Aviation Administration, and implementing crucial fixes to ensure success on the second attempt. The first-stage booster successfully touched down on a drone ship named Jacklyn, after Bezos's mother, marking a picture-perfect landing that prompted raucous cheers from Blue Origin employees watching from viewing sites. This capability to land and reuse boosters is essential for reducing launch costs and making space missions economically viable.

The technical prowess displayed during this mission cannot be overstated. New Glenn stands at more than 320 feet tall, making it one of the tallest rockets ever built, and features a seven-meter fairing that offers increased volume compared to five-meter class commercial launch systems. The reusable first stage is powered by seven BE-4 engines Blue Origin's most powerful liquefied natural gas-fueled engines generating over 3.8 million pounds of thrust and designed for a minimum of 25 missions. The booster's successful landing on the Jacklyn platform, located several hundred miles downrange off the Florida coast, involved autonomously descending and deploying six hydraulically actuated legs to secure itself on the platform. This precise choreography of thrust, timing, and trajectory represents years of engineering refinement and demonstrates that Blue Origin has mastered one of spaceflight's most challenging technical hurdles.


Beyond the landing spectacle, the mission's primary objective was equally impressive. Roughly 34 minutes after liftoff, New Glenn's upper stage successfully deployed twin spacecraft for NASA's ESCAPADE mission short for Escape and Plasma Acceleration and Dynamics Explorers. Built by Rocket Lab for NASA and UC Berkeley, the mission costs less than $80 million, significantly less than the agency's flagship Mars missions in the past. The two small satellites will embark on an innovative trajectory to Mars, using a novel flight plan that allows flexible launch windows outside the typical two-year Earth-Mars transfer windows. The spacecraft will travel to the Earth-sun Lagrange point 2, loitering there for nearly a year before swinging back past Earth in November 2026 for a gravity-assist maneuver that will propel them toward Mars, with orbital insertion expected in September 2027. Once there, the twin probes will study how Mars lost its once-thick atmosphere to become the arid red planet we observe today.

The successful booster recovery fundamentally transforms Blue Origin's business model and competitive positioning. Rocket reusability is no longer theoretical for Blue Origin it's operational. The company will now work to refurbish and refly the recovered booster, demonstrating the full reuse cycle that SpaceX has perfected with its Falcon 9 rocket fleet. The accomplishment puts Blue Origin in position to compete with SpaceX, which dominates the world's launch market with its Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, and Starship rockets. Even SpaceX executives acknowledged the significance of the achievement, with CEO Gwynne Shotwell posting a simple "Magnificent!" on social media, while Elon Musk himself offered congratulations. This mutual respect among competitors underscores the importance of Blue Origin's breakthrough not just for the company, but for the entire commercial space industry.

The broader implications of this success extend far beyond a single company's fortunes. Blue Origin has ambitious plans that depend on New Glenn's reliability and cost-effectiveness. The company is developing a lunar lander and has secured contracts to launch various commercial and government payloads.
